Opening the Door a Little Wider to build self confidence.

When I left my corporate career almost two years ago, I started my business for one simple reason, I wanted to help people believe in themselves again.  To help people stop living lives driven by fear, self-doubt and everyone else’s expectations and to help them build confidence that lasts, trust their own decisions and create lives that actually feel like their own.

Looking back now, I’ve realised something.  The people I’ve worked with have all arrived with very different stories, but underneath those stories, there has often been something remarkably similar, they all lacked belief in their ability.  Worrying constantly about what other people might think, second-guessing decisions, even when deep down they already knew what they wanted.  They compared their lives, careers, bodies, businesses and progress to everyone else’s, usually deciding they were somehow behind.  Expecting things to go wrong before they had even begun and listening to that little voice in their head telling them they weren’t ready, weren’t capable or would probably get it wrong anyway.

Perhaps some of that feels familiar, it certainly does to me.  I know what it feels like to put everyone else first, to wonder whether you’re good enough, to look successful from the outside while quietly questioning whether the life you are living is actually the life you want.  I also know what it feels like to have dreams and ambitions, but somehow keep getting in your own way.

That is often where coaching starts because sometimes we simply need a little help to understand ourselves differently.  We need someone to help us notice the patterns we can no longer see, to question the beliefs we have mistaken for facts, to recognise where fear has been making our decisions and to separate what we genuinely want from what we have been conditioned to expect from ourselves.

One of the greatest compliments I receive isn’t when someone tells me I’ve changed their life.  It is when a client says: “I finally trust myself again”.  Independence is always the goal, I don’t want clients to need me forever.  I want them to leave knowing they can navigate challenges, make decisions and continue building their lives with confidence long after our sessions have finished and I have seen what becomes possible when that starts to happen.

I worked with someone who had reached a point where getting out of bed in the morning felt almost impossible.  In their mind, things always went wrong, so what was the point in even trying?  Today, they run a successful business.

Another client accepted a new promotion while privately worrying that everyone would soon realise they weren’t capable of doing it.  They have since been promoted again.

I worked with a business owner who had unknowingly placed a ceiling on their own success; they had the talent, the experience and the ambition, but somewhere along the way they had decided there was a limit to how successful they were allowed to become.  They went on to triple their income.

I also supported someone who had spent so many years putting their family first that they felt they no longer had a life of their own.  Living with depression and anxiety for many years and accessing different forms of professional support.  Through coaching, they began to understand their own needs, rebuild their confidence, set healthier boundaries and create space for themselves without believing that doing so made them selfish.  They now have a life where they can care for their family and care for themselves, and, perhaps most importantly, they are enjoying life in a way they once struggled to imagine.

None of those changes happened because I handed anyone the perfect answer but because each person was willing to look honestly at the beliefs shaping their life.  To challenge the thoughts that had been making their decisions and to start taking actions that reflected who they wanted to become.

Sometimes that meant applying for the role, sometimes it meant starting the business, sometimes it meant asking for more, saying no, setting a boundary or finally admitting that the life they had built no longer made them happy and sometimes it simply meant choosing not to believe every thought that entered their head.

Watching that happen has always been the greatest reward of my work.

Every award sitting on my shelf represents hundreds of conversations where someone chose to believe in themselves instead of their fear and that is why this summer has felt so significant. I was incredibly honoured to receive two Female Founder Awards Scotland 2026.  For me, they weren’t simply recognition of a business, they were recognition of the impact my work is having.

Female Founder Scotland 2026 Awards

One award recognised my work in education, and that one means more to me than I can probably put into words.  At a time when mental health and wellbeing support continues to face increasing pressure, it felt like recognition that helping people build confidence, resilience and self-belief is not a luxury, it is life-changing.

These conversations affect how people show up at work, how they make decisions, how they handle pressure, how they build relationships, how they care for themselves and how they imagine their future.

The second award recognised my Inspiring Start-Up Story, which felt much more personal.  I don’t believe my story is extraordinary but I do believe it represents something I hope every client takes away from working with me.  Your past does not have to dictate your future and it is never too late to make a different choice.

I know what it feels like to question yourself, to worry about what other people might think and to wonder whether you are capable of creating the future you keep imagining.  Leaving a secure career without knowing exactly how everything would work out was uncomfortable.  There were many moments when I doubted myself, moments when I wondered whether I had made the right decision and I questioned whether anyone would value what I had to offer.

Those are the same conversations I now have with clients, the difference is that I have lived them too and perhaps that is why this work means so much to me.  I don’t just talk about what might be possible, I know what can happen when you stop waiting to feel completely ready and decide to back yourself anyway.

Alongside these awards, being shortlisted for another UK-wide award has also felt incredibly special.  Again not simply because of the recognition itself, but because it reminds me how far one decision can take you.  One conversation, one belief challenged or one brave step.

People often ask me what coaching actually is and what working with me looks like and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on you.  Some clients come because they are ready to grow their business, but their confidence has not caught up with their ambition.  Some are successful on paper but quietly feel lost, overwhelmed or deeply unsure of themselves.  Some are navigating redundancy, retirement, promotion, relationship changes or a completely new chapter of life.  Some want to stop people-pleasing, overthinking and living according to other people’s opinions.  Others simply know they cannot keep living in the same way, even if they don’t yet know what needs to change.

Whatever brings you through the door, my role isn’t to give you all the answers, it is to help you find your own: to ask better questions, help you understand the patterns driving your decisions, to challenge the beliefs that are keeping you small, help you recognise the difference between fear and fact and to give you practical tools you can continue using long after our work together has finished.

Most importantly, coaching helps you build trust in yourself, because confidence isn’t something a lucky few are born with.  It is something we build through experience, action, keeping promises to ourselves and through doing things we once believed we couldn’t.

Since launching Jill Clowes Coaching, I have watched people achieve far more than they imagined when they first walked through the door.  Those moments will always matter more to me than any award.  As I move through my second year in business, it feels like the right time to help even more people, so, throughout August, I’m opening the door a little wider.  To celebrate this year’s awards, and as a thank you for the support, encouragement and belief so many people have shown me, I will be offering a special celebration rate across selected coaching services.  Spaces will be limited so that I can continue giving every client the time, care and support they deserve.

Whether you need one focused conversation to help you reset, ongoing support to create meaningful change or simply a space to finally work through the thoughts that have been keeping you stuck, there are different ways we can work together.  This isn’t about becoming a completely different person, it is about understanding yourself better, recognising what has been holding you back and creating the confidence to become more of who you already are.

If you have been thinking about investing in yourself, making a change or having the conversation you keep putting off, perhaps this is your moment.  You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start, you don’t need to feel confident first.  You don’t even need to know exactly what you want, you just need to be willing to believe that life could look different.

Sometimes one conversation really can change the direction of your life.

Perhaps this is yours.
