Stop waiting for the big moment

When I started my coaching business, I don't think I fully appreciated how much growth would happen quietly. Like many people, I imagined there would be defining moments, moments when everything would suddenly fall into place and I'd feel like I'd 'made it'. What I've learned, both personally and professionally, is that change rarely announces itself in grand gestures.

Two coffee cups on a table by the window sitting in the sun.
What are you waiting for?

We all love the idea of transformation, that moment when everything clicks. A breakthrough conversation or the day we wake up feeling confident, calm, successful, or finally enough.  After working with people through coaching, I've come to believe something different; the big moment is a myth.

Real change rarely arrives with fireworks or a fanfare. It isn't one life-changing conversation or one perfect decision, it's built quietly, through hundreds of small moments that most people barely notice while they're happening.

It's choosing to challenge a limiting belief instead of accepting it, taking one step towards a goal that feels overwhelming, showing yourself compassion on a difficult day instead of criticism, or starting again after you've lost confidence or momentum.  These moments matter more than we realise.

As we reach the halfway point of the year, it's easy to focus on what hasn't happened yet. The goals that feel further away than we hoped, the plans that haven't unfolded as quickly as we'd imagined. Perhaps, however, we underestimate the power of what has already been quietly building beneath the surface.

I often tell clients that coaching isn't about becoming a completely different person overnight, it's about uncovering the person you already are and creating habits, beliefs and actions that support the life you want to live.

Think of every small action as a choice.  Every time you say yes to something that aligns with your values, you make a choice.  Every time you set a boundary, challenge self-doubt, or choose progress over perfection, you make a choice.  Every time you keep going when you don't feel motivated, you make a choice.  None of these moments seem particularly remarkable on their own, that's exactly why they're so powerful.  Transformation isn't built in one giant leap, it's built through consistency.

Looking back, I can see that my own journey wasn't shaped by one brave decision or one perfect opportunity. It was built through small choices; studying, getting accredited, having conversations, supporting clients, saying yes to opportunities that felt scary and continuing to show up even when I couldn't see where it would all lead.

There were days when I questioned myself, days when I wondered if I was good enough, whether I was making a difference, or whether anyone would value what I had to offer. Growth doesn't happen because we never doubt ourselves, it happens because we continue anyway.

Some days you'll feel inspired other days you'll doubt yourself.  There will be times when progress feels slow, when nothing appears to be changing, and when you wonder if all your effort is making any difference.  These are the days that matter most; the day you decide to start again after giving up, the day you take one tiny step when you really don't feel like it, the day you refuse to let fear make your decisions.  These days count double because growth isn't about never struggling, it's about continuing, even when the results aren't visible yet.

One of the greatest privileges of being a coach is having a front-row seat to other people's transformations. I've seen clients arrive feeling overwhelmed, uncertain and held back by beliefs that no longer served them. I've watched them slowly rediscover confidence, clarity and possibility, not because of one magical conversation, but because they kept making those small choices.

Recently, I was honoured to receive two awards at the Female Founder Awards Scotland 2026; the Scotland Education Award and the Start-Up Founder Inspiring Story Award.  Of course, I was incredibly grateful and proud but standing there, I couldn't help but smile at something many people don't see.  These awards weren't won in a single moment, they weren't built on one great day, one brilliant idea, or one lucky break.  They were built on countless ordinary days, the days spent learning, spent doubting myself, the days when I wondered if I was making any difference at all and the days when I simply showed up and took the next step.

Remembering that growth whether in life, business, confidence or mindset never happens in dramatic leaps.  It happens with one conversation, one client, one lesson, one challenge overcome and one small act of courage at a time.

These awards may have marked a moment worth celebrating, but they were really the result of hundreds of small choices made over time and that's exactly what I witness in coaching.

People often come looking for the breakthrough moment that will change everything, but what I see, time and time again, is that lasting change is created differently.  It's created through the small decisions that nobody applauds, the new belief you choose to embrace, the boundary you finally put in place, the goal you take one step closer towards, the day you start again.  These moments may not feel life-changing when they happen but one day, you'll look back and realise they changed everything.

If receiving those awards taught me anything, it wasn't that I'd arrived. It was a reminder of something I've come to believe deeply: extraordinary things are built through ordinary days and if that's true for me, I know it's true for you too.

One of the greatest privileges of being a coach is having a front-row seat to other people's transformationswatching them realise that they are capable of far more than they believed. I've seen clients arrive feeling overwhelmed, uncertain and held back by beliefs that no longer served them. I've watched them slowly rediscover confidence, clarity replacing overwhelm and possibility, not because of one magical conversation, but because they kept making those small choices.  They kept showing up and gradually, the self-doubt becomes quieter.  One day, often when they least expect it, they look back and realise they are living a life they once only imagined because of hundreds of ordinary days that they chose not to give up on.

If you're waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect plan, or the moment you suddenly feel ready, you might be waiting forever.  The life you want isn't created in one extraordinary moment, it's created through the choices you make, the beliefs you challenge, and the small steps you take every day.

So, let me leave you with the only question that really matters: What small choices are you going to make today?

If you're not sure where to begin, perhaps that's where a conversation starts.
